Security Standards Promote Market Integration

Security Standards Promote Market Integration Beyond the unclear business models, the absence of unified family market standards has created a major roadblock. While integrating various subsystems in a smart home is technically feasible, the lack of open communication protocols between these systems makes interoperability difficult. “Compatibility between different systems and devices is lacking,” said Xing Shaomo from a tech company. “Although some technical workarounds can achieve compatibility, they often lead to higher costs and unstable performance.” The smart home ecosystem is highly fragmented, with each subsystem—such as wiring, security, and appliances—operating under its own set of rules. This fragmentation hinders the creation of a cohesive system. Only by introducing an overarching industry standard and ensuring compatibility between individual standards can the smart home truly become a unified and secure environment. Clearly, the smart home market represents a complex system that no single company can dominate. Defining product interfaces and agreements requires collective effort, often driven by government agencies or industry organizations. In April 2013, the National Standardization Management Committee officially approved the release of the "Control Network HBES Technical Specifications - Residential and Building Control Systems." This is a recommended national standard (GB/T 20965-2013), and it marks China’s version of the global KNX standard. It reflects the practical application of KNX technology within the Chinese market. Additionally, seven national standards from the IGRS Information Industry Association were officially released in 2013. These standards, based on the "Information Technology Information Equipment Resource Sharing Collaborative Service," cover key areas such as smart homes, power line communication, next-generation internet, service quality, and interactive media devices. Though not mandatory, their implementation signals a significant step forward in the standardization of the smart home industry in China. As the market continues to grow, more manufacturers are entering the space, accelerating development. Through market-driven innovation and competition, the technologies that survive will lay the foundation for future standardization efforts. With leadership from key players and active promotion by strong companies, industry standards will gradually evolve and mature. Looking ahead, the integration of these standards will be a central focus for the smart home industry, paving the way for more comprehensive and enforceable regulations in the years to come.
