Shenzhen high school girls invent "induction traffic light"
At Futian Middle School, a unique and innovative traffic light system has been installed on the main road, and it's the creation of a high school girl named Chen Jia. This "Intelligent Sensing Traffic Light" was recently showcased to reporters, who were impressed by its design and functionality.
Chen Jia, a senior student at the school, developed this smart traffic light system after being inspired by her observations of pedestrians crossing streets without paying attention to the signals. She noticed that many people would cross the street in groups, often ignoring the red lights. This behavior, commonly referred to as the "Chinese style crossing," motivated her to think about how technology could improve safety and efficiency at intersections.
Drawing from her knowledge of infrared sensors used in alarm systems and automatic faucets, she proposed adding infrared sensors to traditional traffic lights. The idea was to make the signal lights more responsive to pedestrian presence, allowing them to cross safely without waiting too long. With the support of her teacher, Zhao Xiaodong, she began developing the concept and eventually built a working model.
To refine her design, Chen Jia conducted field research, visiting various intersections and studying existing traffic light systems. She faced challenges such as determining the optimal timing for pedestrian crossings and ensuring vehicle safety. After several iterations, she integrated infrared sensors into the traffic light poles, enabling the system to detect pedestrians within 10 meters. Once activated, the system would delay the green light for vehicles by 10 seconds, giving pedestrians enough time to cross safely.
She also incorporated solar panels and lithium batteries to power the traffic light, making it energy-efficient and environmentally friendly. Even during power outages, the system could continue operating for a limited time.
Her project won second place in the Guangdong Youth Science and Technology Innovation Competition and a gold medal at the Shenzhen Innovation Competition. With the support of the local traffic police department, the system was upgraded and officially installed on campus. Police officer Xu Zebin from the Science and Technology Department worked closely with Chen Jia and the school to enhance the system with features like lightning protection and optical isolation.
Now, the intelligent traffic light is functioning on the main road near the school’s stadium. The principal confirmed that it operates just like a regular traffic light, requiring vehicles to stop when the red light is on. This innovation not only demonstrates the creativity of young inventors but also highlights the importance of integrating technology into everyday life for better safety and sustainability.
