Rice Experts Successfully Breed Super Northeast Rice to Realize Two-season Planting

In an exclusive interview held in Shenyang on the 5th, Zhou Xiaodong, a senior scientist at the National Institute of Agriculture under the Ministry of Agriculture, shared insights into his decade-long research on the efficient integration and utilization of local and foreign rice resources. His team successfully developed a super-early-ripening rice variety that matures in just 80 days, enabling double-season rice cultivation in Liaoning province in laboratory settings. Zhou emphasized that while this breakthrough holds great promise, it still requires further refinement due to high production costs and technical complexity. However, he is optimistic that within the next 3 to 5 years, large-scale commercial production and practical application in the Northeast region will become a reality. September in Shenyang was a vibrant and hopeful time for Zhou Xiaodong, who spent the season closely monitoring rice fields across the region. As an agricultural expert from the Ministry of Agriculture and the Heilongjiang Farming Reclamation Bureau, he took on a farmer's image, walking through the fields to assess this year’s yield and admire the golden expanse of ripening crops. Reflecting on the situation, he said, “The black soil of the Northeast is turning white—without changing our planting methods, we risk serious food security issues.” According to Zhou, China’s agriculture must embrace a new scientific path that both protects land resources and ensures increased grain output. If the Northeast can implement dual-season rice planting, it could revolutionize traditional farming practices that have persisted for thousands of years, leading to better harvests and higher yields. This 80-day rice variety, developed through over a decade of scientific research, was created using wild domestication and mutagenesis techniques, as well as space breeding methods. The key advantage of this short-cycle rice is its ability to reduce planting costs, with yields exceeding 1,000 pounds per acre in the first season and up to 900 pounds in the second. In recent years, Liaozhong County in Shenyang has successfully implemented two rice plantings per year, while Sanya, Hainan, has even achieved four seasons of planting. Shenyang experiences a frost-free period of approximately 160–165 days annually, making it perfectly suitable for the 80-day super-early rice variety. In his lab, Zhou has been traveling across China for over 10 years, collecting data and conducting experiments on this unique rice strain. From 805 farms in Heilongjiang to Sanya in Hainan, and from Handan in Anhui to Shenyang in Liaoning, he has covered more than 100,000 kilometers each year for nearly 10 months. Historically, no one had dared to imagine or attempt such a project. But Zhou dared to dream. He told reporters that with the technology and resources he now possesses, he has rewritten the history of rice cultivation in China. Currently, the rice base in Liaozhong County is already producing two harvests a year, achieving both good yields and high productivity. “Thanks to scientific progress, this variety is being strongly promoted,” Zhou said. Over the past decade, the super-early rice has passed all necessary tests in the lab, and the results show it is well-suited for double-season planting in the Northeast. While current production costs and technical demands are still high, he believes these challenges will be overcome in the next few years. Once fully realized, this innovation will mark a new era in rice farming in Northeast China.
