Shenzhen high school girls invent "induction traffic light"
At the center of the school, a unique traffic light system has caught everyone's attention. It's not just any ordinary signal light — it's the creation of a high school girl from Futian Middle School in Shenzhen. Recently, Chen Jia, the young inventor, explained the infrared sensing technology behind her smart traffic lights to reporters.
This innovative project, which won second place at the Guangdong Youth Science and Technology Innovation Competition, has now become a real-life solution on campus. With the support of the Shenzhen Traffic Police, the prototype was transformed into a working model and installed on the main road near the school. The system is now actively used by students and staff.
Chen Jia's inspiration came from observing pedestrians crossing the street without paying attention to the signals. She noticed how people would rush across whenever someone started walking. This behavior, often referred to as "Chinese-style jaywalking," led her to think about making the traffic lights more intelligent and user-friendly.
She drew ideas from existing systems like infrared alarm sensors and automatic faucets. "What if we added infrared sensors to the traffic lights?" she asked herself. Her idea sparked a discussion among classmates, and with guidance from her teacher, Zhao Xiaodong, she began developing the concept.
To make the system functional, Chen Jia conducted field research, visiting various intersections and studying the timing of traffic signals. She aimed to create a balance between allowing enough time for pedestrians to cross safely and ensuring vehicles had enough time to stop. By integrating infrared sensors and solar power, she designed a system that could operate efficiently and sustainably.
Her final model, made from recycled materials like an old wine box, showcased both creativity and environmental responsibility. The traffic light uses solar cells and lithium batteries, making it energy-efficient and capable of functioning even during power outages.
In April, Chen Jia presented her invention at the 28th Guangdong Youth Science and Technology Innovation Contest, where it earned a provincial second prize. It also won a gold medal at the Shenzhen regional competition.
The local traffic police were impressed by the student’s initiative and helped refine the design. Officer Xu Zebin from the Science and Technology Department worked closely with Chen Jia and her teachers to improve the system, including adding lightning protection and optical isolation features.
Today, the new "intelligent sensory traffic light" is in operation at Futian Middle School, located at the zebra crossing between the school building and the stadium. The principal confirmed that it functions like a regular traffic light, requiring vehicles to stop when the red light is on.
Chen Jia's story shows that innovation can come from anywhere — even a high school student with a passion for science and a desire to make the world a little safer.
