Rice Experts Successfully Breed Super Northeast Rice to Realize Two-season Planting

In an exclusive interview held in Shenyang on the 5th, Zhou Xiaodong, a senior scientist at the National Institute of Agriculture under the Ministry of Agriculture, shared insights into his decade-long research on the efficient integration and utilization of local and foreign rice resources. His experiments revealed that through advanced breeding techniques, he successfully developed a super-early-ripening rice variety with an 80-day growth cycle. This breakthrough has enabled double-crop rice farming in Liaoning, achieving success in laboratory conditions. Zhou emphasized that while the current method involves high costs and complex technology, it is expected to be scaled up for commercial production within the next 3 to 5 years. The Northeast region could see a transformation in traditional single-season rice planting, leading to higher yields and better harvests. September in Shenyang was marked by warm weather and a vibrant rice-growing season. As an agricultural expert, Zhou visited fields across the region, inspecting this year’s rice output and admiring the golden landscapes. Reflecting on the challenges of soil degradation due to excessive fertilizer use, he expressed concerns about long-term food security. “The black land of the Northeast is turning white,” he said, stressing the need for sustainable agricultural practices. According to Zhou, China must adopt a new scientific approach that protects land resources while increasing grain production. If the Northeast achieves dual-season rice planting, it will break away from centuries-old single-crop traditions, bringing both abundant harvests and higher productivity. The 80-day rice variety, developed through over a decade of research, combines wild domestication, mutagenesis, and space breeding techniques. Its key advantage is a shortened growth cycle, which lowers planting costs. Each acre can yield over 1,000 pounds in the first season, with the second season reaching 900 pounds. In recent years, Liaozhong County in Shenyang has successfully planted two rice crops annually, while Sanya, Hainan, has even achieved four-season planting. Shenyang's frost-free period ranges between 160 to 165 days, making it suitable for the 80-day rice variety. Over the past decade, Zhou has traveled extensively across China, conducting field trials from Heilongjiang to Hainan, Anhui, and Liaoning. Every year, he spends nearly 10 months traveling over 100,000 kilometers across these regions. Historically, no one dared to attempt such a project, but Zhou dared to dream. He believes that with the technologies and resources he has mastered, the traditional rice planting history in China has been rewritten. Currently, the rice base in Liaozhong County has successfully implemented two seasons of rice planting, achieving both good harvests and high yields. Zhou stated that over the past 10 years, the super-early rice has passed all lab tests, showing strong adaptability for double-season planting in the Northeast. Although the current cost and technical demands are still high, he is confident that large-scale production and application will be realized within 3 to 5 years, opening a new chapter in rice cultivation in Northeast China.
