"Four Phases" to Chemically Control Weeds in Sugarcane Fields
In recent years, the area dedicated to sugarcane cultivation in northern China has been increasing annually, and weed infestations have become more severe. This article will guide you through effective methods for controlling weeds in sugarcane fields.
**1. Pre-emergence Herbicide Application After Sowing**
During this stage, the following herbicides can be used:
- **Atrazine 1.4% Suspension**: Apply 250–350 ml per acre, mixed with water and sprayed onto the soil surface. It effectively controls annual monocot and dicot weeds, as well as has some inhibitory effect on perennial weeds. The effect lasts for 40–60 days.
- **Simazine WP 2.5%**: Use 200–300 grams per acre, mixed with water and sprayed. It is effective against weeds such as Digitaria, Cyperus, Setaria viridis, and Polygonum.
- **Oxalic Acid 3.2% Emulsifiable Concentrate**: Apply 125–150 ml per mu (approximately 0.067 acres), mixed with water. It helps prevent both annual monocot and dicot weeds, with an effectiveness period of 40–60 days.
**2. Herbicide Use During the Seedling Stage**
At this stage, when sugarcane seedlings grow to 3–5 cm in height, the following options are available:
- **Arsenic Suspoemulsion 25%**: Apply 250–350 ml per acre. It is effective in controlling annual monocot and dicot weeds, with a duration of 40–60 days.
- **Grass Emulsifiable Concentrate 2.8%**: Apply 125–150 ml per acre. It targets annual monocot and dicot weeds and remains effective for 40–60 days.
- **Simazine 3.5%**: When the sugarcane reaches 3–5 cm, apply 200–300 grams per acre. Mixing with water and spraying helps eliminate annual monocot and dicot weeds.
**3. Mid to Late Growth Period**
During this phase, it's important to target weeds directly. Once the sugarcane grows above 1 meter, you can use:
- **Fluconazole WP 50%**: Apply 200–250 ml per acre, or **Atrazine Suspension 40%**: 200–250 ml per acre. Alternatively, **Sulforaphane 4%**: 400–500 ml per acre, or **Tracer 20%**: 200–300 ml per acre, mixed with 40–60 kg of fresh water. Spray directly onto the weeds for effective control.
By using these methods, farmers can efficiently manage weeds in sugarcane fields, ensuring better crop growth and higher yields. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions and safety guidelines when applying herbicides.
