Sino-U.S. team develops new chargers

As mobile phone features continue to evolve, so does their power consumption. This has led to a growing concern about how to charge devices conveniently. According to a report from Hong Kong's "Wen Wei Po" on January 25, a joint Chinese-American research team is developing a tiny charger that can be implanted inside the human body. This innovative device will harness energy generated by the constant movement of organs like the heart to power smartphones and other portable electronics. For people who are always on the go, this could mean no more worrying about sudden battery drain.

Currently, implantable batteries are already used in cardiac pacemakers. The research team is now exploring how to adapt these technologies to power mobile devices. They have developed biocompatible plastic-encased "solid solution lead zirconate titanate (PZT) nanoribbons," combined with energy conversion circuits, rectifiers, and micro-batteries. These components are designed to be implanted in organs such as the heart, lungs, and diaphragm, providing continuous power for electronic devices.

The team has tested the technology in cattle, even installing two devices on the heart simultaneously to boost power output. Their goal is to first apply this technology to medical implants that require constant operation, such as heart rate monitors, pacemakers, and defibrillators. If successful, this breakthrough could revolutionize both healthcare and personal electronics, making energy independence a reality for many.

This development marks a significant step toward integrating sustainable power sources directly into the human body, opening up new possibilities for future technology and medical advancements. As research continues, we may soon see a world where our own biological systems help keep our devices running smoothly—without the need for traditional charging methods.
