According to a recent report by European media outlet Autonews, South Korea’s Kia Motors has announced a recall of specific models in Australia due to a potential issue with the seat belt pretensioner. The affected models include the Kia Sportage and Hider, with nearly 3,000 vehicles involved in the recall. This safety-related action is aimed at addressing a defect that could compromise passenger protection during an accident. Kia has confirmed that a total of 2,941 vehicles will be recalled in Australia. Owners are advised to bring their vehicles to an authorized dealer for free repairs. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) warned that if the cables within the pretensioner fail, passengers could suffer injuries during a collision. The ACCC emphasized that the pretensioner is designed to tighten the seat belts rapidly in the event of a crash, providing critical additional safety. However, if the internal cable breaks, this function may not operate as intended. In a statement, the ACCC said: “If the cable inside the pretensioner breaks during deployment, it may not fully protect passengers during a crash.†So far, Kia Motors Korea has not reported any incidents of injury caused by this defect. The company has stated that it will contact affected owners via email to arrange free maintenance, which may include replacing the faulty parts. The repair process is expected to take approximately one hour, ensuring minimal disruption for vehicle owners.
