70% of Russians are reluctant to eat genetically modified foods

According to a report by the Russian Independent on February 5, a significant majority of Russians—70%—are unwilling to consume genetically modified foods. Despite this public sentiment, Russian regulations currently allow food manufacturers to avoid disclosing whether their products contain genetically modified ingredients. Recent data from an industry association reveals that 20% of food items in Russia are genetically modified, while 90% of dairy products, eggs, poultry, pork, beef, and fish contain antibiotics. Under existing legislation, companies are required to label genetically modified content only when it exceeds 0.9%, but in practice, such disclosures are rare. In response to growing consumer concerns, the Russian Consumers Association has drafted a new bill aimed at ensuring full transparency. The proposal would require all food manufacturers to clearly inform the public about the presence of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in their products. This move reflects increasing pressure from both the public and advocacy groups for greater accountability in the food industry.
