70% of Russians are reluctant to eat genetically modified foods

According to a report by the Russian Independent on February 5, a significant majority of Russians—70%—are hesitant to consume genetically modified foods. Despite this public sentiment, current Russian regulations do not require manufacturers to clearly label or disclose information about genetically modified ingredients. Industry statistics reveal that around 20% of food products in Russia contain genetically modified components, while nearly 90% of dairy products, eggs, poultry, pork, beef, and seafood are found to include antibiotics. Under existing laws, companies are only obligated to inform consumers if the transgenic content exceeds 0.9%, but in practice, such disclosures are rare. In response to growing consumer concerns, the Russian Consumers Association is currently drafting a new bill aimed at mandating full transparency from food producers regarding genetically modified ingredients. This proposed legislation reflects a broader push for greater accountability and consumer awareness in the food industry. As public demand for clearer labeling continues to rise, the government may soon face increased pressure to revise its current policies and provide more detailed information to the public.
