Guangdong vigorously promotes soil testing and formula fertilization

In the effort to promote soil testing and formula fertilization, the Guangdong Provincial Department of Agriculture has implemented a model that combines class demonstrations with village-wide progress. The initiative has established 42 provincial demonstration areas covering 10,000 mu each. During key fertilization periods, training sessions and on-site meetings are organized to spread knowledge about soil testing and formula application. As farmers gain access to this information through these efforts, they can now see “model fields” everywhere and easily obtain guidance on soil testing and fertilizer use. This has led to increased participation from local farmers in the field. The success of this program also relies on the leadership of key agricultural enterprises. For instance, in Huidong County, there are 66 leading agricultural companies working alongside the local government to support land development and field trials. These collaborations help guide farmers in adopting soil testing and formula fertilization techniques. Over recent years, the use of formula fertilizers in Huidong has reached 1.7 million mu, with an average annual yield increase of 133 yuan per mu. Given the diverse types of farmland in Guangdong, the local government has introduced a tailored fertilizer supply model: “government soil testing, expert formulas, and farmers building their own fertilizers.” Agricultural departments and designated fertilizer producers share soil testing data. Before major planting seasons like spring or winter, experts are dispatched to formulate appropriate fertilizers for each county. Fertilizer companies then process this data and provide customized solutions based on specific plot locations and crop types, ensuring efficient and targeted application. So far, 95 out of 105 counties in Guangdong have adopted soil testing and formula fertilization programs. Since the central government issued Document No. 1 in 2005, which called for the popularization of this practice, Guangdong has consistently prioritized it as a core agricultural technology initiative. A dedicated fund of 10 million yuan is allocated annually for soil testing and formula fertilization. Over the past seven years, the province has promoted soil testing and formula fertilization across 208 million mu, achieving a cost-effectiveness of 162 million yuan. Looking ahead, the government plans to leverage specialized platforms such as farmer cooperatives to establish socialized agrochemical service organizations. This will explore new service models like “government soil survey, expert formula, enterprise fertilizer supply, and farmer application,” offering integrated services that help farmers improve soil fertility more effectively. As Zhang Yucan, deputy director of the Guangdong Fertilizer Station, explained, this approach aims to bring together scientific research, production, and application to better serve farmers and enhance agricultural productivity.
