Diamond new project will be successful in participating in the auction of scientific and technological achievements
On the morning of September 15, Ningbo held its first-ever auction of scientific and technological achievements, marking a significant step in promoting innovation and commercialization. Eight projects were put up for bidding, and the total transaction amount reached an impressive 3.833 million yuan—far exceeding initial expectations. Among them, the "Industrialization Project of Diamond Powder Surface Functionalization and Diamond Composite Materials" stood out as the most valuable, fetching 1.6 million yuan after seven rounds of intense bidding within just five minutes.
The project, which started at a base price of 1 million yuan with a minimum bid increment of 50,000 yuan, attracted considerable interest. It focuses on advanced applications in machining, ultra-high-temperature heat conduction, and next-generation tools. For instance, when applied to cutting tools, it can increase cutting speed by more than five times without compromising tool life. In consumer electronics like smartphones and computers, it helps prevent overheating, significantly improving performance and user experience.
Jiang Nan, a researcher from the Institute of Materials Science at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and one of the project’s lead developers, expressed surprise at the final price. “This was way higher than we anticipated,†he said. “More importantly, the auction demonstrated that our research is being recognized and valued by the market.â€
The winning bidder, Mr. Zhang from Ningbo Jingdrill Technology Industrial Co., Ltd., shared his excitement. “This auction is just the beginning,†he said. “We hope it opens the door for more collaboration between the Chinese Academy of Sciences and local companies in the future.â€
The entire auction lasted only 40 minutes, during which all eight projects were successfully sold. The fast-paced and competitive environment highlighted the growing interest in technology transfer and commercialization.
Huang Wei, president of the Institute of Information Technology Application at the Ningbo Academy of Sciences, noted that this event marked a shift in dynamics. “In the past, researchers had to actively seek out companies. Now, companies are coming to us,†he said. “It shows that the market has high confidence in our research and development efforts.â€
Yang Jianzhou, director of the Cooperation Department at the Ningbo Science and Technology Bureau, also praised the outcome. “The results exceeded our expectations. Both the bidding process and the final prices were better than we had imagined,†he said. He added that Zhejiang Province will hold a similar auction in November, with Ningbo planning to participate with 30 projects. In the future, the city aims to bring in more intermediaries to facilitate such events and strengthen the connection between research institutions and enterprises.
