Characteristics of rare earth and rare metal ore resources

From the perspective of development and utilization, China's rare earth metal resources exhibit several distinctive characteristics:

1) The distribution of rare earth reserves is highly concentrated, particularly in light rare earths. Although rare earth minerals are found across six regions in China—North China, Northeast China, East China, Central South, Southwest China, and Northwest China—the majority are concentrated in the Baiyun Obo area in Inner Mongolia, which is one of the largest rare earth mining regions in the country. This region accounts for nearly 95% of China’s total rare earth reserves and serves as the primary base for light rare earth production.

2) There is a clear geographical distinction between light and heavy rare earth reserves, often referred to as “north light and south heavy.” Light rare earths are mainly found in northern China, while heavy rare earths are concentrated in the southern regions, especially in the Nanling area. Deposits such as adsorption-type medium and heavy rare earth ores are relatively easy to extract and have become key sources for producing medium and heavy rare earths. In addition, weathering crust and coastal sedimentary sand deposits in the south contain xenotime, a valuable heavy rare earth mineral. Some tungsten deposits in southern Anhui, like Xihuashan and Dangping, also contain associated heavy rare earth minerals such as xenotime, silicon germanium ore, strontium fluorite, and fluorocarbon calcium strontium ore, which can be recovered during the smelting process of tungsten.

3) Many rare earth deposits are associated with other minerals, offering significant potential for comprehensive utilization. Of the hundreds of discovered mineral deposits, more than two-thirds are co-associated, meaning they contain multiple valuable elements. However, most of these deposits are complex in composition and feature fine-grained ore, making them difficult to process. For example, the Bayan Obo deposit contains over 70 types of minerals, including rare earths and thorium, making it one of the world’s most significant rare earth and thorium deposits. Despite the complexity, advances in technology have greatly improved the grade of concentrates and recovery rates, allowing it to serve as a major raw material source for China’s light rare earth industry.

4) China possesses vast quantities and a wide variety of rare earth resources, providing an excellent foundation for the development of its rare earth industry. Proven rare earth reserves exceed 100 million tons, with considerable untapped potential. All 17 rare earth elements have been identified in nature, with only one element lacking natural mineral forms. Most of the remaining 16 elements have known mineral sources. Through metallurgical processes, 16 types of rare earth metals have been successfully extracted from ore minerals. This has led to the production of hundreds of rare earth varieties and thousands of products, meeting domestic demand and contributing significantly to China’s exports, making rare earths one of the country’s key export commodities.

A notable feature of China’s scarce metal resources is that their reserves are concentrated in certain provinces and specific deposits, often referred to as “not sparse.” Over 80% of rare earth reserves are located in Guangdong, Yunnan, Jilin, Sichuan, and Shanxi, primarily within lead-zinc, copper, and coal mines. Gallium reserves, for instance, are largely concentrated in Shanxi, Henan, Guangxi, and Guizhou, mainly associated with bauxite deposits. Indium is mainly found in lead-zinc and copper polymetallic deposits in Yunnan, Guangxi, Inner Mongolia, and Qinghai, accounting for 87% of China’s total indium reserves. Tantalum is mostly linked to molybdenum deposits, with over 90% of reserves concentrated in Shaanxi, Henan, Jilin, and Heilongjiang. Strontium is highly concentrated, with over 90% of its reserves found in the Jinping lead-zinc deposit in Yunnan. While cadmium and selenium are more scattered, cadmium is present in 24 provinces, and selenium in 18 provinces, often found in association with other minerals.
