Dalian Chemical Research Institute has developed a new generation of all-vanadium flow battery stacks

Recently, the scientific research team led by Researcher Li Xianfeng and Researcher Zhang Huamin of Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics (hereinafter referred to as Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics), Chinese Academy of Sciences successfully developed a new generation of low-cost, high-power all-vanadium flow battery stacks. After testing, the energy efficiency of the stack is more than 81% when it operates at a constant power of 30kW, and the 100-cycle capacity has no attenuation.

The inherent randomness, intermittency, volatility, and difficulty of direct grid connection of renewable energy such as wind energy and solar energy have restricted the development and utilization of renewable energy to a certain extent. All-vanadium flow battery is a large-scale energy storage technology with high cost performance, high energy efficiency, and long life. It can store unstable renewable energy and achieve stable output utilization. The all-vanadium flow battery energy storage system is composed of a stack, an electrolyte solution, a piping system, a battery management system, and an energy conversion system. Among them, the stack has played a vital role. Increasing the power density of the stack and reducing the cost of the stack will further accelerate the industrialization of the all-vanadium flow battery technology.

"We have achieved improvements to the assembly process of battery stacks by applying independently developed weldable porous ion conductive membranes." Li Xianfeng introduced. "The new-generation all-vanadium flow battery stack not only maintains the high power density of the traditional stack, but also reduces its total cost by 40% compared to the traditional stack."

For many years, Dalian Institute of Chemical Research has adhered to the "production, learning, research and use" innovative development model, combined with the country's major demand for energy storage technology, in high performance, low cost key materials for flow batteries, stack technology and mass production, A series of technological breakthroughs have been made in the design and integration of large-scale energy storage systems, and in cooperation with Dalian Rongke Energy Storage Technology Development Co., Ltd., more than 30 sets of kilowatt-megawatt application demonstration projects have been successfully implemented at home and abroad, including the largest domestic Guodian Longyuan 5MW/10MWh all-vanadium liquid flow wind farm energy storage system. In addition, Dalian 200MW/800MWh all-vanadium flow battery energy storage system is under construction.

The successful development of a new generation of all-vanadium flow battery stacks will greatly reduce the cost of all-vanadium flow battery systems and promote the industrial application of all-vanadium flow batteries.
