A simple and innovative method can quickly convert kitchen waste into hydrogen energy

According to data from the US Department of Agriculture, Americans discard up to 40% of food, and the value is about $ 200 billion annually. Scientists at Purdue University have proposed a simple new method that can help reduce the amount of waste and produce another renewable and clean energy-hydrogen.

This is a method that uses yeast to increase hydrogen production from kitchen waste. So far, the production of hydrogen for clean fuels has mainly been achieved through the organic degradation of bacteria, which may lead to slow production rates and complicated pretreatment of raw materials.

This new method uses yeast to decompose kitchen waste to produce clean hydrogen and uses as few pretreatment steps as possible.

"We want to create a simple way to convert all kitchen waste into clean energy," said Robert Kramer, a professor of energy and environment at the NiSource Charity Foundation and a physics professor at Purdue University Northwest. "Our system basically allows users to crush kitchen waste into a reactor and then use our method to produce hydrogen within 18-24 hours. This is much faster than other methods."

Kramer is also the director of Purdue University's Northwest Energy Efficiency and Reliability Center, and he and his team have verified the technology with a variety of yeasts. He estimates that Purdue ’s system can increase efficiency by 20% -25% when generating hydrogen from kitchen waste compared to previous methods.

Kramer said that this method can be easily combined with solar thermal technology to become an independent power source. In addition, it is also a clean fuel source and can have many applications in agriculture, food and transportation industries. Kramer said Purdue ’s approach also does not involve the possible explosion risk of hydrogen as an energy source.

Kramer and his team worked with Purdue University Research Foundation's Office of Technology Commercialization to apply for patents for this and other related innovations. They are also looking for new partners to seek commercial development.
