Asbestos rubber gasket installation method

How to Install Asbestos Rubber Mats:

Proper installation of asbestos rubber mats is crucial for ensuring a secure and long-lasting seal. Follow these steps carefully to achieve the best results.

1. Begin by thoroughly cleaning the flange surface. Remove all remnants of the old gasket using a metal flange scraper, spray strip remover, and a wire brush. Inspect the flange for any damage or irregularities. The surface must be smooth and free of debris to ensure proper contact with the new gasket.

2. Choose the thinnest gasket possible for optimal performance. However, if the flange is warped or severely damaged, a slightly thicker gasket may be necessary to compensate for the uneven surface and provide a better seal.

3. It’s recommended to use a ring gasket rather than a full planar one. Ring gaskets are easier to position and apply even pressure, which helps prevent leaks and ensures a tighter seal over time.

4. Avoid using wet anti-adhesive agents. Instead, opt for dry options like talc, graphite, or mica. Never use metal-based anti-adhesives, as they can leave particles in the sealing area, leading to improper contact and potential failure of the seal.

5. Ensure that the gasket is properly cut according to industry standards such as ANSI. Place it on the flange and center it. If you're working with a convex flange, the bolts will help align the gasket automatically during installation.

6. Use hard flat washers and well-lubricated fasteners. A torque wrench is essential to apply the correct initial load. This ensures the gasket is compressed evenly without being over-tightened or under-tightened.

7. Tighten the bolts in the correct sequence. Always follow a star pattern or a radial tightening method to distribute pressure evenly across the gasket. This prevents distortion and improves the overall integrity of the seal.

8. During the first tightening, only apply one-third of the recommended torque. Then, after 12 to 24 hours, complete the final tightening following the same sequence. This allows the gasket to settle and ensures a more reliable seal.

9. Always follow all safety regulations while performing this task. Wear appropriate protective gear, including gloves and eye protection, especially when handling materials like asbestos.

10. Never apply liquid or metal-based lubricants or anti-adhesives directly on the gasket. These can compromise the seal and lead to leaks or premature failure. Stick to dry, approved substances only.
