Most children's furniture can not reach the new national standard solid wood furniture has become mainstream

The new national standard for children's furniture has been in effect for over six months, yet many products still fail to meet the updated requirements. Recently, the Shanghai Quality Inspection Department revealed that IKEA’s children’s furniture does not comply with the latest regulations, raising concerns about safety and quality. This incident has drawn public attention to the issue of children's furniture, prompting a closer look at the market. During an investigation, reporters visited Changzhou’s furniture markets and found that some businesses continue to sell products that do not meet the new standards. Children's furniture is available through various channels, including major stores like Red Star Macalline and Yuexing Furniture, as well as local decoration markets. A complete set of branded children’s furniture can cost over 15,000 yuan, while more affordable options start around 3,000 yuan. However, not all products are safe. In one store located at Huaide South Road, a furniture shop sold pine wood beds with sharp edges, which clearly violated the new safety regulations. When asked if the bed was designed for children, the salesperson claimed it was "universal" and used for dormitory settings. Such practices highlight the ongoing challenges in ensuring compliance with the new standard. Industry insiders note that most established brands adhere strictly to the regulations, but smaller manufacturers often struggle to meet the required safety and quality benchmarks. The new national standard sets high expectations, particularly regarding edge rounding, hardware stability, ventilation, and material safety. According to Hu Yingping, a sales representative from Dream Years Children's Furniture, the standard is even stricter than those in the US and Europe. Consumers are becoming more aware, and many now research before purchasing. Parents are increasingly cautious, looking for practical and safe options. Solid wood furniture is gaining popularity, while brightly colored panel furniture is gradually losing its appeal. Experts advise parents to check for solid wood construction by examining drawer bottoms and wardrobe backs. They also recommend choosing furniture with back panels for added stability. Designers suggest that when setting up a child’s room, safety should be a top priority. High beds should be chosen carefully, light colors are preferable, and enough space should be left for play. Placing beds against walls, rather than near windows, is also recommended. Additionally, electrical outlets and switches should be positioned in a way that allows flexibility for future furniture placement. The new national standard, implemented on August 1, 2012, includes several key safety measures: 1. No sharp edges or corners; all contactable external corners below 1600mm from the ground must be rounded. 2. All folding mechanisms must have a manual positioning device to prevent injuries. 3. Gaps must be less than 6mm or greater than 12mm. 4. Enclosed furniture must have ventilation holes to prevent suffocation risks. 5. Safety warnings and age ranges must be clearly marked using standard terms like “danger,” “warning,” and “attention.” With growing awareness and stricter regulations, the children’s furniture market is evolving toward safer, higher-quality products. However, vigilance from both consumers and regulators remains essential to ensure children’s safety.
