Openness, communication, comfort, and integration with nature have become key trends in the design of public buildings. Among various curtain wall systems, the point-supported glass curtain wall stands out as one of the simplest and most elegant solutions. Its main advantage lies in maximizing the transparency of glass, allowing for a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. This feature aligns perfectly with modern architectural trends, and its usage in public buildings has been increasing rapidly in recent years. Although this technology is well-established in many countries abroad, it's still relatively new in China. With the rapid growth of the domestic construction industry, point-supported glass curtain wall systems have begun to attract more attention. Some companies have now developed comprehensive expertise in designing, manufacturing, and installing these systems, and there are already several successful projects in China. However, some design issues and inefficiencies have also emerged, which need to be addressed carefully. In this article, I will discuss these challenges and hope to provide useful insights for future designs. The point-supported glass curtain wall consists of a decorative glass surface and a support structure made up of connecting components. Depending on the visual effect, it can be categorized into flat-head and convex-pointed types. Based on the support system, it can be further divided into glass rib-supported, steel structure-supported, steel rod-supported, and steel cable-supported curtain walls. Performance-wise, this system offers a transparent and open appearance, creating a harmonious relationship between indoor and outdoor environments. The design is both elegant and functional, blending refined metal structures with artistic glass elements. The support structures are versatile, allowing for different architectural styles and aesthetic effects. The glass panels are connected using ball joints, which provide flexibility and help absorb structural deformations. Typically, point-supported glass curtain walls use large areas of transparent glass, emphasizing openness and visibility. This design allows natural light to flood the interior, creating a sense of connection with the outside world. People can enjoy the view of the sky, clouds, and nature from inside, enhancing their comfort and well-being. However, this level of transparency also means high solar heat gain. If not properly managed, the interior can become excessively hot during sunny days. Many current projects fail to consider shading solutions during the design phase, leading to uncomfortable conditions once the building is occupied. Adding shading measures afterward can be costly and complex. Therefore, when planning such curtain walls, it's essential to integrate shading strategies early in the design process. Moreover, coordinating shading systems with the point-supported curtain wall requires careful consideration to ensure both functionality and aesthetics.
