The three principles of choice of masks

First, the dust blocking efficiency of masks. The effectiveness of a mask in filtering out dust largely depends on its ability to block fine particles, especially those smaller than 5 microns. These tiny particles can easily reach the alveoli in the lungs and pose serious health risks. Standard gauze masks rely on mechanical filtration, where larger dust particles are trapped by the fabric’s mesh. However, finer particles, particularly those under 5 microns, can pass through the gaps and enter the respiratory system. In contrast, many dust masks used abroad are made with electrostatically charged fibers that attract and trap these small particles as they pass through, significantly improving their protective performance.

Second, the fit of the mask and facial shape. A mask must fit snugly against the face to prevent unfiltered air from entering. If the mask doesn’t seal properly, harmful substances in the air can leak in, making even the most advanced mask ineffective. That's why many countries have strict regulations requiring workers to perform mask fit tests regularly. This ensures that the right mask is chosen and worn correctly, maximizing protection and safety in the workplace.

Third, comfort during wear. A good mask should be lightweight, easy to breathe through, and comfortable for long periods. It should also be hygienic and require minimal maintenance. Many modern disposable masks are designed to be used once and then discarded when saturated or damaged, eliminating the need for cleaning or replacing parts. Additionally, masks with an arched design help maintain a secure fit while allowing space for breathing, making them more comfortable to wear throughout the day.
