Pozzolanic Portland cement, also known as volcanic ash cement and designated as P·P, is a type of hydraulic cement made by grinding a mixture of Portland cement clinker, 20-50% volcanic ash materials (such as volcanic ash, tuff, pumice, zeolite, diatomite, fly ash, burned clay, shale, and coal gangue), and an appropriate amount of gypsum. According to Chinese standards, the proportion of volcanic ash in the cement must be between 20% and 50% by weight. It's allowed to replace up to one-third of the volcanic ash with granulated blast furnace slag, provided that the remaining volcanic ash content is still at least 20%. This type of cement is available in five strength grades: 275, 325, 425, 525, and 625. Compared to ordinary Portland cement, pozzolanic cement has a lower specific gravity, releases less heat during hydration, and exhibits better resistance to chemical corrosion. However, it has higher water demand and greater drying shrinkage. Its early strength is lower, but its long-term strength develops more rapidly. The performance of this cement is highly influenced by environmental conditions, particularly humidity, which helps accelerate strength gain. Due to these characteristics, volcanic ash cement is typically used in underground structures, underwater projects, and other moist environments. It should not be used in dry areas, or in applications where freeze-thaw cycles, wet-dry cycles, or high early strength are required.
