A typical ethylene gas pump system is illustrated in Figure 2-134. After passing through a condenser using propane refrigerant, the ethylene gas is condensed into a saturated liquid. The low-temperature magnetic pump then transfers this liquid to a storage tank, where it reaches a gas-liquid equilibrium.
NPSHa, or Net Positive Suction Head Available, refers to the height from the surface of the tank to the horizontal centerline of the pump. For vertical pumps, NPSH is measured from the tank surface to the reference point of the pump’s primary impeller, as shown in Figure 2-135. Ensuring sufficient NPSHa is critical for maintaining stable operation and preventing damage to the pump caused by vaporization of the liquid at the impeller inlet. Proper system design and careful monitoring of these parameters are essential for reliable and efficient cryogenic pumping operations.
