Feeding is stressful----three notes on the administration of poultry mix

1. Accurately determine the dosage of the mixture. When administering the mixture, the correct amount of the drug must be carefully calculated based on the concentration of the solution or feed being used. If the medication is to be given based on the bird's weight, the total dosage should be strictly calculated according to the average body weight of the flock. The drug should then be mixed into the feed as instructed. It is essential to weigh the drug accurately and avoid estimating, as an incorrect dose can either be ineffective or lead to serious side effects, such as poisoning. 2. Ensure the drug is thoroughly mixed with the feed. To ensure all birds receive a similar amount of medication, the drug must be evenly distributed throughout the feed. Start by mixing the drug with a small portion of the feed, then gradually add it to the main batch while continuing to mix thoroughly. The smaller the quantity of the drug, the more careful the mixing process needs to be, as direct mixing into the bulk feed may result in uneven distribution. For drugs that are toxic or have significant side effects—such as sulfonamides or furans—it is especially important to mix them properly. Never simply pour the entire dose into the feed at once, as this could lead to some birds receiving too much and others not enough, which can reduce the effectiveness of treatment and even cause harm. 3. Monitor for any adverse reactions after administration. Some medications can interact with ingredients in the feed, potentially causing negative effects. For example, prolonged use of sulfa drugs in feed may lead to deficiencies in vitamin B1 and K. In such cases, it’s important to monitor the birds closely and consider supplementing their diet with these vitamins. Always observe the flock for signs of illness, reduced appetite, or unusual behavior, as early detection can prevent more severe health issues. By staying attentive, you can ensure the medication is both safe and effective.
