Have "safe and reliable" GM rice experts try it?
In a recent event held in Beijing, the Beijing Association of Science and Technology Journalists partnered with Huazhong Agricultural University to conduct a voluntary tasting session of genetically modified rice. During the event, experts publicly endorsed the technology, asserting that genetically modified crops are "safe and reliable." According to the organizers, since May this year, they have conducted 22 similar events across various cities, with nearly 1,000 volunteers participating. (Beijing Times, July 14)
While the experts claim GM foods are safe, their assurance lacks concrete, tangible evidence. It remains theoretical, and without real-world data, how can one be certain? If these foods were truly harmless, why not offer them freely to the public without any restrictions? The term "free trial" suggests a lack of confidence in the product's safety.
After a trial, can we really guarantee long-term safety? Many harmful substances only manifest after prolonged exposure. For example, pesticide residues have been present in our food for years, and while individuals may not show immediate effects, medical data has linked them to various health issues over time. Similarly, the long-term effects of genetically modified foods remain unknown.
At this point, there is no conclusive data proving that GM foods are completely safe. Experts' claims of "safety and reliability" are based on assumptions rather than solid proof. Science demands rigorous testing and verifiable data before making such claims. Without absolute evidence, it’s irresponsible to make broad statements about safety.
So, where exactly do these experts get their "safe and reliable" data from? Have they personally tested the rice for decades? Or are they simply trusting foreign studies or experts? This raises serious questions about the credibility of their assertions.
Imagine if these GM foods were truly safe. Why wouldn’t the countries that developed them offer them freely to other nations instead of conducting costly trials? It's unlikely they would risk people's lives just for the sake of testing. More often than not, new drugs or technologies are tested on others under the guise of humanitarian aid—essentially using people as test subjects.
Science and innovation are essential for societal progress, and GM technology could potentially bring benefits. However, without clear and convincing evidence of safety, we must be cautious. We must protect our people from becoming unwilling test subjects. As a nation, we value life and should never compromise it for unproven science.
If GM foods are truly safe, then proper trials should be conducted, and free tastings should be transparent and well-documented. Who are the volunteers? What are the criteria for participation? These questions need answers.
To the experts, I ask: If GM rice is truly safe, why not start with yourself? Only those who understand the science should take part in such trials. Volunteers may act out of passion, but experts should lead by example. Have you, the so-called experts, actually tried the "safe and reliable" GM rice?
