German scientists lobby for adding genetically modified markers

When it comes to labeling genetically modified foods, the battle line is usually clear: those who oppose genetic modification want to increase the label, and those who support genetic modification do not think it necessary. But recently, a group of German scientists and other supporters launched an activity that required the labeling of genetically modified products.

Their reversal of attitude is a political game; not to make it more difficult for GM products to reach consumers, they hope that the new regulations will allow more Germans to have extensive access to existing GM products, such as food, clothing, drugs or laundry. Pink and so on, and realize they are nothing terrible.

The petition submitted to the German Parliament requires the government to enact a law that stipulates the addition of genetically modified markers for all foods, seeds, medicines, textiles, chemicals and other products that have used genetic engineering technology improvements. They also called on the government to support similar regulations at the EU level.

This petition was written by Horst Rehberger, leader of the "Green Motivation Forum," and several outstanding scientists including Nobel Prize winner Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard and some politicians also signed their support. If it can obtain more than 50,000 signatures in the next four weeks, the council must consider the proposal.

At present, Germany has already required GM crops and foods produced directly from these crops to add such identification. However, some indirect products of GM technology are not required to be labeled. For example, if the genetically modified feed is not consumed within six weeks before being slaughtered, the pork can be certified as non-transgenic. "The current system is not applicable and sometimes even misleading," Rehberger said.

Greenpeace and other environmental groups also agreed that products made from animals raised on genetically modified feeds should be labeled, but products that have little effect on other genetically modified technologies need not be labeled. “There is a difference between tofu made from 100% genetically modified soybeans and milk produced from cows that have taken vitamins produced by genetically modified means,” said Stephanie T觟we-Rimkeit of Greenpeace.

However, the relevant recommendations do not specify how the label should look. Digital scientists supporting the proposal stated that the labels should be graded. "I think we need to be honest and honest with consumers," said Wilfried Schwab, a biotechnologist at the Technical University of Munich.

Hans-J?觟rg Jacobsen, a geneticist, said that the proposal provided an opportunity to change the dialogue on genetically modified organisms. "I don't think it was wrong to label GM foods at the beginning," he said. If the genetically modified logo on a store shelf is unclear, how will consumers respond? Research shows that they may not be as concerned about what GM advocates think.

Jacobsen said that over time, the GM logo may become a positive sign, like "Made in Germany", "Let's wait and see." (Zhang Zhang) "China Science Journal" (2015-05-20 3rd Edition International)
