South Korean scientists have developed a seawater battery

Nature has given us abundant resources. With the advancement of science and technology, we can now also produce electricity through seawater. Recently, researchers from the National Institute of Science and Technology in Ulsan, South Korea, have developed a seawater battery. The seawater battery is more environmentally friendly than the traditional lithium battery, and the cost of obtaining electrical energy is also lower. More importantly, it can reduce the risk of fire.

It is reported that this seawater battery research project was jointly participated by Korea Electric Power Company (KEPCO) and South Korea East and West Power Company (EWP). UNIST was responsible for the specific research work. The two companies were very optimistic about the project and invested a large sum of money in succession. At the same time, the two companies also stated that they will invest 3 billion and 2 billion won respectively in 2018 and 2019, which means UNIST will not need to worry about R&D funding at all.

The operation principle of this so-called seawater battery is not complicated. According to the UNIST's introduction, the battery will store sodium ions in the seawater at the cathode when it is charged, and the sodium reacts with water and oxygen to form sodium hydroxide when discharging. The electricity will be released during this period. Obviously, this way of obtaining electricity is more environmentally friendly, and sodium is a very rich element of the earth's reserves. The acquisition cost is very low.

Now the research team has successfully mastered the entire storage and power generation process, but it is still too early to be brought to market because the power output still does not meet the market requirements, so at this stage the main task of the team is to upgrade the seawater battery. The power output capability achieved this goal by improving the battery's shape design and various parameters. The team said that the future of seawater batteries is expected to replace lithium batteries and become a more economical and environmentally friendly storage medium.
