Schneider expands PV production in South Africa
Abstract Schneider Electric is set to significantly expand its manufacturing operations in South Africa, with a focus on key renewable energy components such as inverters, solar arrays, and monitoring systems. This move aligns with the company’s commitment to supporting the country's clean energy transition and meeting local production targets under the Renewable Energy Independent Power Generation Procurement Plan (REIPPPP).
The company is expected to surpass the minimum local content requirement of 45% for the first round of the REIPPPP program, with plans to manufacture up to 60% of the necessary equipment locally for the South African projects. This level of localization not only supports job creation but also strengthens the domestic supply chain.
Schneider has already started supplying critical components for its initial 20MW photovoltaic (PV) project in the region, marking an important step in its long-term strategy for the African market. In addition to scaling up its solar manufacturing capabilities, the company has also customized its equipment to better suit the unique environmental conditions and specific requirements of the South African market.
The REIPPPP initiative, led by the Ministry of Energy, aims to procure 2GW of solar PV capacity with an estimated total value of $2.9 billion. This ambitious target highlights the growing importance of renewable energy in South Africa’s energy mix.
The third round of the REIPPPP tendering process is currently underway, with the deadline for submissions set for August 19th. The preferred bidders are expected to be announced on October 29th, setting the stage for significant investment and development in the country’s renewable energy sector.
